I’m ashamed to say I have only just watched Grandma- the indie Lily Tomlin flick that came out in 2015 and I couldn’t watch before forgetting about it because they did a great job of anti-piracy.
I wish I had given it my money.
Two hours later, some of the final words are ringing in my ears:
”Of course it meant something to me. I loved being in love with you.”
Ugh.
The romance of it all. I love a good sensitive family drama with a melancholy ending.
And how about when that melancholy ending belongs to a character in her 70s? Now that is anti-ageism. No closure, no sense of impending death, no need to wrap up old hurts before it’s too late. Just good old-fashioned family reunion drama.
Lily Tomlin is doing so much for Queer culture in her 70s. With Grace and Frankie exploring the romantic twists and turns of female friendship, and this movie. Okay those are the only examples I can think of, but that’s enough.
Favourite scenes:
- The perfect representation of a narcissistic mother. When they walk into Sage’s mother’s office, we totally get why this was the last option.
- Elle refusing to apologise to that guy she was married to. Before we learnt about the abortion, I mean. That was pretty grim. She kinda effed him over, turns out. DRAMA.
- Laverne Cox.
