The Nightmare Experimental Mess Cut
The Nightmare was supposed to be Frankie's 'calling card' short, made in 2017.
It was a poetic, abstract short about a man having a nightmare where he's running from his own heartbeat in the woods (in his nightmare) and while he's sleeping he approaches himself (like a sleep paralysis demon- but dressed as a surgeon) and slices into himself. There was a whole prosthetics sequence where his own face pushes through his belly flesh. Something went wrong with the gelatin, the dust from the mould got onto it and weirded the colour- and it turned out it didn't work at all in the green light. This part of the shoot day served as a test for that, and I know exactly what I'd try next to keep figuring it out.
What happened next was I realised shooting in the actual dark on a Canon D700 or whatever it was, was a total error and all the pixels have, like, popped or something in those indoor dark scenes.
These challenges combined, back in 2017, were enough to stop the project completely. Who doesn't relate?
Anyway. I'm working on a neat cut with what we shot, but this was the result of throwing everything together and I actually really like it so it's going in the YouTube sketchbook. It's an art film. The sort of thing you might see in an art gallery. That's what this is.
It goes black for too long at the end but the pull-back at the end took freaking hours so make sure you go forward to that if you're into it.
Bon apetite!
Apologies, there are no captions yet!
